What is batik?

Batik is the dyeing technique used to create the block prints on batik fabrics. It begins with natural cotton or viscose dipped into a dye bath. The fabric is then carefully folded and tied to create an even texture. Once dry, it is stamped with melted wax and immersed in dye again. The wax protects the first layer of colour. This process may be repeated several times to achieve specific patterns or special effects. When the quality is perfect, the fabric is dried in the sun and then commercially finished. Since much of the work is carried out outdoors, the weather has a strong influence on the final result. Every metre of this artistic fabric is the product of craftsmanship and is entirely unique.

What is block printing?
